(I didn’t, but postprocessing let me work around the problem).

Preamble:

I have a small business. For years we’ve been creating PDFs from any computer on our network through a “virtual appliance’ called YAFPC (“Yet Another Free PDF Composer”).

The appliance originally ran on an old PC, then on a server that ran several other virtual machines. It had a neat web interface and would allow PDF printers to be created that would appear on the network for all of our users to use. It had one printer for plain A4 paper, one for A4 paper with a letterhead background, another one for an obscure use of mine, and so on. If you printed to it, it would email you the PDF (for any user, without any extra setup needed per user). It could also put the PDFs on one of our file servers or make them available from it’s built in file server.

If I remember correctly it cost £30 and ran since 2006 right through until today, November 2014. One of my best software investments!

However, Windows 8 came along and it no longer worked. Getting Windows 8 to print to it directly turned out to be impossible. The program was not going to be updated or replaced with a new version. I managed a short term work around having windows 8 print to a samba printer queue which converted and forwarded to the YAFPC virtual appliance. There were problems, page sizes not be exact and so on but it worked in a fashion.

Roll forward to today when I’ve just got a new network PDF virtual printer working. It wasn’t so easy to do (some 20 hours I guess) so here are my setup notes for others to follow. The final run through of these notes had it installed and working in about an hour.

These steps assume you know quite a bit about setting up linux servers. Please feel free to use the comments to point out errors or corrections, or add more complete instructions, and I’ll edit this post with the updates. Also please suggest alternatives methods that you needed to use to meet your needs.

Overview – We are going to create:

a new Ubuntu based linux server as a virtual machine

Install CUPS, the Common Unix Printing System

Install CUPS-PDF, and extension that allows files to be created from the print queue

Create a postprocessing script that will run every time CUPS-PDF is used that will customise our PDF’s and send them where we want them (to our users).

Sounds simple, right 🙂

sunspot solr slow in production (fixed by using IP address instead of domain name)

BT Wifi hotspots intercept and redirect google SSL searches

How to change a folder icon to a picture in Mac OS X

VMware consolidated backup missing a catalogue file – fixed!

A quick note on my first steps using stripe.com

A new form of Comment spam? I’ve been working on things in the background but today marks the first of a whole bundle of waiting posts. This post includes my site’s first ever competition as well as it’s first ever video, created using the magic of my PDA’s video camera, Quicktime Pro, Macromedia Flash Video Encoder,Macromedia Dreamweaver, One not very willing actor (James) and a 3M Snap Band….

I wanted the video to be here, but it needed some special code which won’t work through the movabletype software I use here (It’s a security thing, that’s good!). Follow this link to see the video

I know what you’re going to say, “don’t give up your day job, and you won’t need to worry about being available for the Oscar ceremony…”. I know that too, but it’s been fun making it work and I’ve learnt some things too.

Competition Bit
I bet most of you jumped straight here wondering what you can win? Well, I’m giving away a 3M Snap Band as modelled by James in the video. They are reflective bands that will wrap around things, like James arm, a leg or a bike handle bar and so on. You can roll them flat and they will hold that position. As well as the video, you can find out all about them at www.3MBeSeen.co.uk. Now the weathers getting darker it makes sense for the children to have something reflective on them. As James is showing, they happen to be fun as well as safe. Better still, they only cost 3.00.

Wining will be easy. During the next week a new post will appear on this site called “Enter Now to win!”. If you are the first person to comment, you win.

Remember that comments don’t appear immediately, I have to moderate them all to stop all the spam from appearing. If you are having trouble posting a comment, send me an email instead. I’ll use the timestamp on the email to log your time of entry (that is, my server timestamp, so don’t try changing your computer clock!).
A couple of simple rules. 1) I decide who wins, my decision is final. 2) I get to change the rules whenever I feel like it. 3) I’ll be posting the band to you if you live in the UK. If you don’t live in the UK then there’s no need to enter. 4) You can enter on behalf of someone else if you like (eg If you are in Australia but you want your prize posted to someone in the UK, that’s fine). 5)

Now, if you’re interested in how this all came about, read on….

Nightfall ONE (Isaac Remember that domain mail-2204vf49.co.uk that had it’s address details hidden as it was registered to a non-trading individual who had opted out of displaying details in the registry? I spoke to nominet about that and they said if I could send them evidence that the domain was actually registered for a trading reason then they could ‘correct’ the opt out declaration and show the details (only non-trading individuals can opt out of the registry). I sent them a fax explaining the history of spam from this domain and extracts from my server log files and they agreed that the domain is really being used commercially. So here it
is, the owner of the spam sending domain is: [begin fanfare]

Domain name:
mail-2204vf49.co.uk

Registrant:
Tony Slater

Registrant type:
UK Individual

Registrant’s address:
du-pont house
Cranbrook
GH56 9JH
GB

WAIT!!! STOP THE FANFARE!!! … there’s something fishy about that address. Like no street name… and I don’t live far from Cranbrook and I happen to know that Cranbrook is in the TN postcodes, not GH. The Royal Mail website doesn’t even recognise the GH postcode.

What next? Well, I’ve sent Nominet an email asking what to do when an address is false in the registry. I think I’ll give company “T” another phone call as well. The man there admited sending us the spam though this domain, so perhaps he’ll tell me who owns it (perhaps I’m giving the benefit of doubt to often, but hey, perhaps they could have accidentally registered the name with completely incorrect details……)

Spam Wars – A busy day!

Spam Wars – a little progress.

Batteries will *require* recycling – so what happens to ipods?

Spam wars continue…

A new category – Warbirds

Spam (warning – I'll be ranting again!)

The Naked Sun (Issac Asimov)

The Songs of Distant Earth (Arthur C.Clarke)

Blast from the past!

A Dawn Like Thunder (Douglas Reeman)

Issac Assimov's Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation

Boot from DVD (bios setting)

A new category!

International post

My New Phone

For many many years I’ve had a Nokia 8310. Like the one in the picture here. It worked fine, fitted the car kit and did all that was expected of it. I also had a Palm IIIc (like the picture here) which meant that I could take my diary with me. It would automatically update the office diary so everyone would know where I was, and everyone could add/update appointments as needed. It was a great setup, but unfortunately there was a fatal flaw in this arrangement. I almost always didn’t have the Palm with me when I wanted it. Not because it was too big, the size was fine. It was just that whereas I could remember to take the phone with me, I didn’t use the Palm enough to make sure I would always have that with me.

There’s another problem I’ve had too. Everywhere I go on business I need to take my laptop with me. It means should something happen on one of the servers I can log in and fix it remotely. It doesn’t happen often, but it sure makes me feel better knowing that if it does I can probably do something about it. It’s no fun carrying a laptop around all day just in case and I’d been thinking it would be great if I got a PDA that could browse the internet, be my diary and be my phone all in one go. Well, these type of devices have slowly become more common but it’s only now that I’ve finally decided it’s worth spending some money in an effort to make life a little easier.

So here it is, my new phone is an O2 XDA Exec. (Actually, the picture is the silver coloured HTC Universal, the 02 model is black and branded for 02 but the only decent image I could find was from the original equipment manufacturer) This is probably going to be another very long and boring post for most of you, so if you’re really interested follow the link to see all I’ve got to say on the big change over.

I won an iPod!

New experiment – googleads now on the site

The CD/DVD-Drive and the Paperclip (a.k.a. how to get your DVD out of your computer when the power is off)

Phases of Life

The Big Server Move

The holiday photos

Majestic12 – a distributed search engine

The evening of Christmas day

Telesales

Sharon came home! I was speaking to a friend who uses a Mac and he proudly showed how by pressing one key (or combination) he could hide all of the open programs and display the OS X desktop. There’s an equivalent key in Windows XP too, it’s a combination of the “Windows Key” + D.
